The world of rally raid is undergoing a transformation. With the approval of new regulations by the World Motor Sport Council, the FIA World Rally-Raid Championship is preparing to enter a new era. These changes promise to refine event formats, simplify operational procedures, and establish a championship dedicated to senior drivers. A true rejuvenation in the world of off-road racing that could change the game.
A championship for master drivers
The creation of a new FIA Rally-Raid championship for drivers over 50 has been approved, thus establishing a title specifically dedicated to this category. Gone are the days when competitions were solely dominated by the vigor of youth. Silver drivers are now welcome, while Platinum and Gold drivers must sit on the sidelines. This initiative aims to provide independent drivers with a meaningful competitive goal, as the overall level of competition continues to rise like a dune during a sandstorm.
Changes to the prologue format
Prologues, those opening races often seen as a warm-up, will also undergo a transformation. Starting from the 2026 season, they will only be used during the first race of the season. For subsequent events, the starting order for the first stage will be determined by the current championship standings. A decision that alleviates the time pressure on week-long rally raids, where the sporting value of prologues is often questioned. Organizers and participants can thus breathe a little easier, avoiding the stress of a chaotic start like in a video game where you have to restart after a failure.

Removal of the power stage section
The World Motor Sport Council has also decided to remove the famous power stage section from Championship events. After observing the operational challenges posed during the 2025 season, it became clear that this feature did not provide the expected benefit in terms of live broadcasting. By removing this format, the hope is to simplify event organization and improve overall efficiency. It’s like removing an unnecessary part from an engine: everything runs better without it.
Opening of registrations for the 2026 Baja Cups
The calendars for the FIA World, European, and Middle East Baja Cups for 2026 have been approved. Registrations are open on the official Baja website. Drivers from the World and European Cups will be able to choose six events from eight to score points, while all four events from the Middle East will count towards the standings. The competition promises to be as thrilling as an action-packed blockbuster, with races expected to be full of twists and turns.

Here, we have a view of the spectacular landscapes that will serve as a backdrop for the Baja Cups. These varied terrains add an epic dimension to the events, like a grand setting in a science fiction film.

Upcoming improvements to technical regulations
Further amendments to the sporting and technical regulations governing the various cups will be proposed to the World Motor Sport Council at a meeting scheduled for December 10. Expectations are high, as these changes could further transform the landscape of rally raid. Imagine a future where each race becomes a true spectacle, with even more powerful vehicles and impeccable operational management.
