A camouflaged prototype, recently spotted on our roads, could very well be a 296 Challenge Stradale, combining the adrenaline of a race car with the practicality of a homologated model. Enthusiasts are in an uproar, and rightly so!
A Prototype That Turns Heads
As anticipation builds around the electric Luce, Ferrari seems to be preparing a surprise for lovers of traditional engines. Indeed, a camouflaged prototype, resembling a race car ready to hit the pavement, has been spotted on public roads. At first glance, this model appears to be an evolution of the 296 Challenge, launched at the end of 2023. But then, why would Ferrari be testing such a beast on open roads with a license plate? A question that piques the curiosity of enthusiasts.
Details That Raise Questions
What can be observed from this prototype is fascinating. Unlike the 296 Challenge Evo, which reportedly opted for polycarbonate side windows, this vehicle seems to have a “standard” cabin. This suggests a more accessible approach, far from the stripped-down cell of models exclusively intended for racing. The wheels, also different, are not fitted with slick tires like those on the Challenge, indicating a compromise between performance and comfort.

An Engine Built for Performance
If this prototype turns out to be a 296 Challenge Stradale, it could represent an even more dedicated version for enthusiasts than last year’s Speciale. The real challenge lies in the powertrain. Drawing inspiration from race cars, this homologated version could forgo hybrid elements in favor of a “pure” V6, allowing for a significant weight reduction.
Currently, the 296 Challenge boasts a dry weight of just 1,330 kg. In comparison, the 296 Speciale weighs 1,410 kg before adding fluids. One can reasonably imagine that a road-legal Challenge would fall somewhere between these two figures. However, it seems difficult to envision Ferrari achieving the incredibly low mass of the competition version, due to the safety and homologation requirements that weigh on a production model.
Impressive Power
In race configuration, the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 develops an impressive power of 690 hp and a torque of 740 Nm. As for the Speciale, still quite recent, it maintains this same power while displaying a slightly higher torque of 755 Nm. These figures reflect Ferrari’s sporting ambitions and the driving pleasure that these models can offer.
