A key component of this initiative is the introduction of “Physical AI,” which combines digital AI with physical robots, enabling the use of humanoid robots in real-world manufacturing environments.

For the first time, the BMW Group is rolling out Physical AI in Europe with a pilot project at its Leipzig plant. This initiative aims to incorporate humanoid robots into existing vehicle production lines and explore their potential roles in battery and component manufacturing.

Its design allows for versatile attachments and applications, particularly in high-voltage battery assembly and component manufacturing.

Insights from Previous Deployments

The earlier deployment of humanoid robots at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in the US provided valuable lessons. The Figure 02 robot successfully contributed to the production of over 30,000 BMW X3s by executing precise tasks such as positioning sheet metal parts—roles that demanded high accuracy and speed.

This experience demonstrated that humanoid robots can efficiently handle repetitive tasks while integrating smoothly into existing workflows.
