New York/Munich. The BMW iX3 has secured a remarkable double victory at the 2026 World Car Awards, being named both “World Car of the Year” and “World Electric Vehicle” by an international jury of 98 automotive journalists. Competing against a field of 57 vehicles for the overall title, the iX3 showcased its exceptional performance, driving dynamics, and innovative technology, solidifying its status as a standout model in the electric vehicle segment.
A landmark achievement for BMW
This year’s accolades mark the tenth and eleventh awards for the BMW Group at these prestigious awards. Earlier in February, Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, was also honoured as “World Car Person of the Year.” The dual recognition for the iX3 highlights BMW’s commitment to innovation and excellence in the automotive industry.
The first of a new generation
The BMW iX3 is the inaugural model from the Neue Klasse range, first unveiled at the IAA Mobility 2025. It sets a new benchmark with a range of up to 805 kilometres (WLTP) and rapid battery charging capabilities of up to 400 kW. With an energy consumption of just 17.9–15.1 kWh/100 km, it exemplifies efficiency and performance in a fully electric Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV).
Advanced technology at its core
Powering the iX3 50 xDrive are two electric motors producing a combined output of 345 kW (469 hp) and 645 Nm of torque. This allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, with a top speed of 210 km/h. Central to its performance is an advanced electronics architecture consisting of four high-performance computers—dubbed the Heart of Joy—managing driving dynamics and enhancing overall driving experience.
Innovative infotainment system
The interior features the new BMW Panoramic iDrive system, which integrates four key components for a seamless user experience. This includes an expansive display that spans from A-pillar to A-pillar and a high-resolution central display for intuitive touch control. The design emphasises clarity and ease of use, aligning with BMW’s focus on driver engagement.
Recognising leadership in automotive innovation
Oliver Zipse’s leadership has been pivotal in steering BMW towards electrification and sustainability while maintaining brand identity and profitability. The jury noted his engineering-led approach as crucial in navigating a rapidly evolving automotive landscape, further solidifying BMW’s position as a leader in innovation.
More than just awards
The World Car Awards serve as an essential resource for over 413 million readers worldwide, influencing purchasing decisions based on thorough evaluations from jurors across different markets. Eligible vehicles must meet specific production volumes and sales criteria across major global markets to qualify for these prestigious titles.
A history of recognition
With this latest success, the BMW Group continues its legacy at the World Car Awards, having previously won nine titles since their inception in 2003. Notably, the BMW 3 Series was crowned “World Car of the Year” in 2006. The iX3’s recent achievements add to a growing list of accolades, including recognition from leading automotive publications such as “What Car?” and “auto motor und sport.”
