Introduction to BMW M’s Electric Future
Munich. BMW M is set to redefine high-performance driving with the introduction of its fully electric models, commencing in 2027. The new BMW M Neue Klasse will embody the brand’s ethos, “Born on the racetrack. Made for the streets,” by integrating a fully electric drivetrain for the first time. Franciscus van Meel, Managing Director of BMW M GmbH, states, “The next generation of models are set to establish a new benchmark in the high-performance vehicle segment.”
Advanced Electric Drivetrain Technology
The BMW M Neue Klasse will feature an innovative electric drivetrain that merges driving pleasure with racetrack capability. Key attributes include a long range, high charging performance through 800-volt technology, and efficient energy recuperation, making it suitable for everyday use. The newly designed architecture, with centrally controlled individual wheel drive, enhances driving dynamics and safety.
Central Control Architecture and Computing Power
Significant improvements in driving dynamics stem from the advanced central control and electronics architecture of the Neue Klasse. Four high-performance computers, referred to as “Superbrains,” facilitate enhanced performance across driving dynamics, automated driving, infotainment, and other functions. This setup enables quicker data exchange and allows for faster software updates and upgrades.
The BMW M eDrive Concept
The BMW M Neue Klasse is built from the ground up around the BMW M eDrive technology, which utilizes BMW Gen6 components. Each wheel is powered by its own electric motor, optimized by M-specific control software. This allows for exceptional driving dynamics and safety, maximizing recuperation and traction right up to the limits of performance.
Driving Performance Expectations
Each electric model in the BMW M Neue Klasse will employ two electric drive units—one for the front axle and one for the rear—ensuring performance befitting the BMW M badge. This configuration provides the advantages of both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive while enhancing driving dynamics. Notably, the front axle can be completely decoupled, allowing for improved efficiency and extended range during longer journeys.
High-Voltage Battery Specifications
The BMW M eDrive system is powered by a high-voltage battery with over 100 kWh of usable energy, designed specifically for high-performance vehicles. It features a performance-optimized variant of the Gen6 cylindrical cell and an advanced cooling system. This setup ensures high peak performance and rapid charging capabilities, making it ideal for both road and track use.
Lightweight Design Innovations
In pursuit of weight reduction, BMW M will introduce natural fiber elements into its fully electric high-performance lineup for the first time. Having gained experience in using this material since 2019 in motorsport, BMW has found that it offers similar properties to carbon fiber but can be produced with approximately 40% less CO2 emissions.
