The first pre-series vehicles roll off the line
Munich. The BMW Group plant in Munich has started production of its first near-series test vehicles for the new BMW i3*. This milestone marks the beginning of the final preparations before the start of series production, scheduled for the second half of 2026.
Importance of pre-series production
Peter Weber, head of the BMW Group plant in Munich, emphasized the importance of this phase: “The production of pre-series vehicles is an important milestone for our plant. For the first time, we have built a BMW i3 entirely in our plant using cutting-edge manufacturing technology and digitally connected processes.”
The current production phase allows for testing logistics and manufacturing processes in real conditions across various facilities, including a modernized press shop, a new body shop, and a state-of-the-art paint shop.
Integration and refinement of processes
The integration of new models through pre-series vehicles is crucial for preparing future mass production. A unique aspect of the Munich plant is the collaboration between its team and a nearby pilot plant, which has facilitated the assembly of the first vehicles at the Research and Innovation Center.
With the completion of new manufacturing and logistics areas, all production steps now take place on-site, ensuring that logistics processes and manufacturing equipment operate efficiently. Although production volumes are currently low, all parts are supplied by designated material flows and carefully processed along the production line.
Optimization through system testing
Ongoing system tests for the new vehicle model are designed to uncover further optimization opportunities. Insights gained from these tests will guide efforts to refine processes in the coming months.
Intensive employee training
As part of this phase, employees undergo intensive training, first through augmented reality and now with hands-on experience of the new facilities and machines. Close collaboration across all production areas is essential to ensure seamless operations and a successful launch of the series.
