In the jungle of electric SUVs, where Tesla is often considered the king, the Hyundai Ioniq 9 arrives with the arrogance of a young lion. With a bold look, generous space, and a strong personality, this Korean newcomer could very well shake Tesla’s crown.

Tesla is no longer the only ruler

Have you ever watched a hawk in flight, with its piercing gaze and lightning speed? That’s exactly what it feels like when you take the wheel of the Tesla Model Y. But here comes the Hyundai Ioniq 9, and it could prove to be an alternative as appealing as good old rock ‘n’ roll. This electric SUV boasts three rows of seats, a range that would make many of its competitors blush, and power that propels its massive form with surprising ease. Admittedly, it doesn’t have the unbridled acceleration of a Tesla or the minimalist interior that gets so much attention. Nevertheless, it compensates with something that Tesla seems to have forgotten: personality. With its futuristic and bold design, the Ioniq 9 leaves no one indifferent. Sure, its angular rear may not please everyone, but once tamed, its style has a lot to offer.

Upon entering the Ioniq 9’s cabin, you are transported to a universe where the Model Y no longer exists. The Calligraphy version I tested offers an innovative and welcoming interior, where every surface exudes quality. Adults can even comfortably slide into the third row. Compared to Tesla, it’s not just a matter of numbers or aesthetics; it’s a true experience of comfort and attention to detail. The Hyundai invites you to linger, where the Tesla may seem cold and impersonal.

The Ioniq 9: a true spectacle on wheels

No need to be a design expert to recognize that the Ioniq 9 attracts attention like a magnet. Its sculpted body and sleek lines give it an elegance that some much more expensive models would envy. Admittedly, its dimensions evoke a slight minivan spirit, but that’s where the comparisons end. With its imposing look and pixelated LED lights, it makes a unique presence on the road, much like a rock band on stage at the height of its career.

Inside, the space is like a haven of peace. The immense glass roof and superior quality materials envelop passengers in a serene atmosphere. Small details like ambient LED lighting and extendable footrests on all seats add a touch of luxury worthy of the finest lounges. Unlike the coldness of the Model Y, the interior of the Hyundai radiates warmth and friendliness. In terms of driving position, it’s simply paradise on earth.

Tesla may win at the starting line, but that’s not everything

On paper, Tesla dominates with its impressive figures: up to 327 miles of range for the Model Y compared to 311 miles for the Ioniq 9. However, during my real-world tests, I saw the Hyundai display an astonishing range of 401 miles in ECO mode. Even in normal and sport modes, I stayed above 350 miles. In terms of power, with 422 horsepower under the hood, the Ioniq 9 effortlessly propels you, even with your family asleep in the back. It’s a pleasant sensation, somewhat like driving a high-speed train: fast, but without unpleasant jolts.

It’s true that the Model Y may feel faster when you’re behind the wheel; its ability to devour asphalt is undeniable. Nevertheless, the Ioniq 9 has this smoothness that allows for stress-free acceleration without excessive agitation. The suspension strikes a perfect balance between comfort and control, avoiding any unwarranted movement despite the vehicle’s bulk. In summary: fast without the roller coaster effect.

Cutting-edge technology: ergonomics above all

When it comes to technology, Hyundai hits hard with the Ioniq 9. The interface is intuitive and easy to navigate — a pleasure compared to the sometimes frustrating complexities of the Tesla system. Yes, the large screen of the Model Y may be appealing at first glance, but it requires some adjustment time. With the Hyundai, there’s no need to learn new gestures or magic words; everything is designed to be accessible at first glance. The physical buttons for essential functions are like old friendly acquaintances when you’re behind the wheel.

And what about the SmartSense suite? With features like highway driving assistance and remote smart parking, you almost brush against autonomous driving without the whims of Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving.” The cherry on top: little luxuries like integrated footrests make every trip even more enjoyable. When you step out of an Ioniq 9, you don’t just feel like you’ve driven an electric car; you feel like you’ve experienced something special.

Value for money according to your needs

In terms of pricing, the Model Y ranges from $45,000 to about $58,000 for the performance versions. On the other hand, the Ioniq 9 starts around $59,000 and easily reaches $77,000 for a fully equipped version. So yes, it can hurt the wallet! But when you consider everything it offers, it starts to look like quite an interesting deal compared to the competition. The Tesla may seem cheaper at first glance, but wait until you add options that push the price well beyond $70,000.

The Ioniq 9 already offers everything you need without playing the “add this or that” game; it’s like having an excellent meal where every dish is included in the price. No need to worry about extras!

Final thoughts

After a week spent with the Hyundai Ioniq 9, it is clear that it is not trying to imitate Tesla; it aims to stand out and evolve in its own way. The Ioniq 9 combines all the elements that Tesla fans appreciate: solid performance, impressive range, and modern technology — all wrapped in a more refined and welcoming frame. It’s a car that seems to have matured where Tesla sometimes remains stuck in its stripped-down futuristic vision.

Of course, one can pay tribute to Tesla for bringing electric vehicles into the collective consciousness. But Hyundai shows that it can evolve at lightning speed. The Ioniq 9 focuses on comfort, practicality, and quality without sacrificing performance or innovation. So if you’re considering the Model Y, don’t hesitate to take a look at the Hyundai Ioniq 9: you might discover that there’s something better without needing a premium badge.
