Mercedes Shines in Bahrain, Cadillac Triggers Red Flags

The winter testing in Bahrain 2026 has begun with mixed fortunes for the teams. Mercedes seems to have turned things around, while Cadillac continues to make headlines for the wrong reasons. With encouraging performances and unexpected interruptions, the Sakhir circuit offers a captivating spectacle.

Mercedes Tops the Times

After a lackluster first day of testing, Mercedes managed to turn things around during the first session on Friday. Behind the wheel of the W17, George Russell not only set the fastest time of the session but also demonstrated impressive activity on the circuit. With 78 laps under his belt, he has already surpassed the total from the previous day, proving that the German team can still compete at the top.

Russell leads his former teammate, Lewis Hamilton, by 0.291 seconds, with Hamilton’s Ferrari, impressive as always, clocking laps with metronomic consistency. This duel between the two drivers is promising for the remainder of the tests and could set the tone for the upcoming season.

Cadillac Causes the Only Session Interruption

However, not everything went smoothly for all teams. Cadillac once again caused a session interruption. Valtteri Bottas had to stop his car in the middle of the track in a runoff area at around 8:50 AM French time. The car, whose name remains a mystery, was already responsible for the first red flag of the previous day.

Fortunately, the car was able to return to the track around 10:45 AM, allowing Bottas to accumulate a total of 37 laps. A meager tally, but enough for the American team to hope for better days in the upcoming sessions.

Satisfactory Collective Running

Despite this incident, the overall outcome of the tests has been positive. All teams managed to complete at least 50 laps on the Sakhir circuit, with the Racing Bulls even surpassing the 80-lap mark thanks to Liam Lawson. This diversity of activity on the track allows teams to fine-tune their setups and better prepare for the upcoming season.

It is undeniable that these winter tests are crucial for the entire grid. Every lap counts, and every piece of data collected is valuable. Teams are competing not only for the best time but also to optimize their performances and refine their strategies.

The Next Steps in Testing

Testing will resume at 1 PM and will be broadcast live on Motorsport.com. The heat of Bahrain and the palpable excitement on the circuit promise more thrilling moments. Formula 1 fans can expect revelations regarding the performance of the cars and drivers as we move toward the start of a new season.

These first hours of testing remind us that every second counts and that the fight for the title begins now. Teams must make the most of these tests to approach the season with the best chances of success.
