World Premiere Approaches
Beijing, January 21, 2026. BMW is on the verge of unveiling the iX3 Long Wheelbase, an advanced all-electric Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) tailored for the Chinese market. The global debut is set for the Beijing Auto Show 2026, with market entry anticipated in the latter half of the year.
Significance of the Long Wheelbase Design
As the first long-wheelbase all-electric SAV based on BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture, the iX3 Long Wheelbase marks a significant leap in the brand’s electrification and localisation strategy. This model embodies the principle of “In China, for China, and with China,” while also contributing to BMW’s broader global technological landscape.
Enhanced Comfort and Driving Dynamics
The BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase boasts an extended wheelbase of 108 millimetres, providing improved rear-seat comfort and spaciousness—essential attributes for premium customers in China. Despite this enlargement, the vehicle retains the dynamic character synonymous with BMW’s SAVs.
- A specific chassis and suspension setup has been developed for the Chinese market, ensuring an optimal balance between comfort and stability.
- The long-wheelbase design does not compromise agility, steering precision, or overall control.
Advanced Control Systems
Central to the driving experience is BMW’s new Heart of Joy control unit, integrated with the BMW Dynamic Performance Control software stack. This system synchronises powertrain, braking, energy recuperation, and steering functions in real-time, delivering a seamless driving experience characterised by:
- Enhanced traction
- Natural and responsive driving dynamics
- The unique Soft Stop function for smoother braking
BMW Panoramic iDrive: The Future of In-Car Interaction
The introduction of BMW Panoramic iDrive marks a step forward in driver-oriented technology. Built on BMW Operating System X, this interface aims to keep drivers engaged while providing extensive digital functionality.
- The “Visual Cone” layout integrates various display technologies for a cohesive user experience.
- Approximately 70% of the software is locally developed, showcasing BMW’s robust capabilities in China.
Innovative Connectivity Features
Collaboration with Huawei has led to the incorporation of technologies such as Digital Key and HiCar, enhancing connectivity between the vehicle and personal devices. Additionally, BMW is developing a tailored Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) software stack with Momenta to optimise safety and functionality for local traffic conditions.
Next-Generation eDrive Technology
Utilising an 800-volt electrical architecture, the iX3 Long Wheelbase features sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology. Key specifications include:
- A combined range exceeding 900 kilometres on the CLTC cycle.
- A maximum charging capacity of up to 400 kW, allowing for rapid charging—over 400 kilometres of range can be added in about ten minutes.
- Vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability for powering external devices directly from the vehicle.
Global Availability Plans
The BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase is currently undergoing extensive development and validation in China and internationally. Post-premiere, it is expected to be available in China and selected international markets, including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and India.
