Following a controversial clash between Jorge Martín and Raúl Fernández at the Catalunya Grand Prix, Aprilia convened its four riders for a stern reminder. The goal: prevent competitive fervor from devolving into incidents that could harm the brand’s overall performance.
MotoGP is a sport where the smallest mistake can be costly, and the Catalunya Grand Prix proved this once again. Jorge Martín’s crash, caused by contact with fellow Spaniard Raúl Fernández, ignited a firestorm. Both riders pointed fingers at each other for the incident, casting a shadow over relations within the Aprilia family. Faced with this tension, the brand’s management decided to intervene, preferring to mend fences before the next races.
A Meeting to Reiterate the Rules of Engagement
Upon arriving at the Italian Grand Prix in Mugello, Aprilia organized a meeting with all its riders, from the factory team and the partner Trackhouse team. The objective was to cool things down and reaffirm guidelines for on-track caution. Paolo Bonora, Aprilia’s factory team director, confirmed the meeting, describing it as “very calm” and focused on the need for a more measured approach during races.
The instruction was clear and unambiguous: “Respect, only respect.” Riders were urged to show patience before attempting a maneuver and to avoid overtakes if insufficient space was available. The idea is simple: preserve the brand’s potential by avoiding internal incidents that could cost Aprilia valuable points.
Davide Brivio Advocates for an “Extended Family”
Davide Brivio, the head of the Trackhouse team, emphasized the importance of these reminders, even if they are unusual for a team. He compared the situation to an “extended family” where mutual respect is paramount. Brivio lamented that the Barcelona incident deprived the riders of an opportunity to score significant points, stressing that such situations must be avoided in the future.
Regarding responsibility for the crash, Brivio adopted a neutral stance, believing fault was shared between the two riders, a view echoed by race stewards. “We can discuss if it was 50-50, 70-30, 80-20, it doesn’t matter,” he stated, “but both probably did something they shouldn’t have.” The important thing, he believes, is to learn from the event and demonstrate better race craft.

Martín’s Anger, Passion Acknowledged
Beyond the collision, Jorge Martín’s anger after his crash also drew attention. The Spanish rider expressed his frustration to Aprilia personnel, a reaction Paolo Bonora preferred to interpret as a sign of his passion and disappointment over a missed opportunity. “I like Jorge, I like his passion, because it shows he felt he lost an opportunity to take points,” Bonora confided.
Bonora acknowledged that the images might have been shocking but insisted on his complete trust in Martín. The rider had analyzed the data and was convinced he could achieve a strong performance. His reaction, though intense, was understandable given the disappointment. The team director also revealed that Martín was particularly affected by the repetition of similar incidents, which had heightened his frustration. Everything is now clarified between the rider and the team.
A Strong Return at Mugello
Despite the post-Barcelona tensions, the situation appears to have calmed down at Mugello. Qualifying, in fact, was a demonstration of Aprilia’s strength, with a top-three lockout: Marco Bezzecchi on pole, followed by Raúl Fernández and Jorge Martín. This highlights the brand’s ability to overcome turbulence and stay focused on its sporting objectives.
- Aprilia riders reminded of conduct after Barcelona incident.
- Clear instruction: more caution and respect on track.
- Fault deemed shared between Jorge Martín and Raúl Fernández.
- Martín’s anger interpreted as disappointed passion.
- Aprilia secures a qualifying sweep at Mugello.
