Renault Clio 5: a city car that still holds its own before its replacement

The Renault Clio 5, although on the verge of making way for the sixth generation, still has a few months ahead of it. But beware, this grace period will not last forever. If you want to take advantage of this diamond-shaped city car, now is the ideal time to act. This article sheds light on the best versions to buy before it’s too late.

A legacy that endures

Renault, true to its habits, does not pull the plug immediately. The previous Clio, which was launched in 2019, is still available for order, particularly in hybrid version. It’s a bit like a good wine that continues to improve over time, even if a new vintage has just appeared. The Clio 5 can be ordered until around spring 2026, but be careful, not all engines will retire at the same time. Fans of the 145 hp 1.6 E-Tech hybrid version can therefore breathe a sigh of relief for a moment.

Is it still worth buying a Renault Clio 5 hybrid?

At first glance, the Clio 5 hybrid seems to be a good deal. It has undeniable advantages over its successor, particularly a more interesting financial accessibility. However, don’t be fooled, the Clio 6 benefits from a 160 hp 1.8 E-Tech engine, offering improved performance and efficiency. Switching to this new version is like changing cars in a video game: you need to choose your moment wisely to optimize your skills! Nevertheless, the 1.6 E-Tech engine of the Clio 5 is not a fuel guzzler and offers decent comfort.

The first models had reliability issues, but these have generally been resolved. That said, it is imperative to negotiate a good price as this hybrid version starts at €24,500, an amount that approaches that of a much more refined Clio 6 E-Tech 160.

Clio 5 petrol, GPL, and diesel models on borrowed time

For those looking for a versatile small city car, the Clio 5 is still a viable option. The Generation trim is undoubtedly the one that offers the best value for money. However, be careful, it is only available with petrol, diesel, or GPL engines. Rumors suggest that these engines will soon retire, likely before the hybrid, so if you are interested in the 1.5 dCi 100 engine, priced at €19,900, it would be wise not to delay.

The GPL version is also worth considering for businesses, but it is destined to disappear. As for the SCe 65 hp engine, it does not shine in terms of performance and is more suited for urban driving where stops and starts are common.

What is the best version in the Renault Clio 5 range?

In this dance of engines, one version stands out clearly: the three-cylinder turbo 1.0 Eco-G 100. At €18,000, it represents an excellent choice and has no direct equivalent in the new generation. Renault has decided not to offer the 1.2 Eco-G 120 hp engine with a manual gearbox on the Clio 6, which is a bit like finding yourself faced with a light menu at your favorite restaurant.

For those looking for a lower-cost city car, this Eco-G variant is probably your best bet in the current Clio 5 range. On the other hand, the TCe 90 hp variant is less attractive: it is more expensive by €500 for performance that does not justify this increase. A difficult decision, but often necessary in the ruthless world of car purchases.

The final moments of an icon

With the imminent arrival of the Clio 6, it is undeniable that the Clio 5 is on the decline. Nevertheless, it remains a relevant option for those looking to acquire a reliable and well-equipped city car at a reasonable price. It’s a bit like the ultimate concert of a legendary band: we know it will be exceptional, but also that it may never happen again.

In short, if you have always dreamed of owning a Renault Clio without blowing your budget, now is the time! Don’t forget that every minute counts when you have a car that is starting to take its bow.
