Surprising Announcement at Tokyo Auto Salon
Toyota President Akio Toyoda generated buzz ahead of the Tokyo Auto Salon by teasing a mid-engine vehicle. Anticipation swirled around a possible MR2 revival, but the reveal turned out to be a pair of modified kei trucks instead.

What’s Under the Hood?
The vehicles in question are based on the Daihatsu Hijet Truck, a cabover kei truck that features a naturally mid-mounted engine. While this matches Toyoda’s description, the outcome diverges significantly from the sleek coupe enthusiasts had hoped for.

Two Concepts Compete
In a twist, Toyoda enlisted both Gazoo Racing and Daihatsu to create distinct versions of the Hijet for the show, inviting attendees to vote for their favorite. Toyoda humorously dubbed the competition a “parent-child quarrel,” reflecting the relationship between Toyota and Daihatsu.

- Toyota GR Hijet Morizo K-Trail: Gazoo Racing’s off-road version designed for rugged terrains.
