In light of the potential dangers of their vehicles, many Tesla owners are taking preventive measures. Between the difficult access to the unlocking handles and the tragic incidents where passengers have been trapped, it seems that a small revolution is underway in the world of automotive accessories.
Unlocking handles sometimes hard to find
In the era of ultra-sophisticated electric cars, it is surprising to learn that some Tesla models have accessibility flaws in emergencies. Indeed, the unlocking handles vary considerably from one model to another and depending on the seat location. Imagine being trapped inside a high-tech vehicle while the electric doors refuse to open after an accident!
- Tesla offers manual unlocks in recent models, but their location is often obscure.
- Many owners invest in window breakers to prepare for any eventuality.
- Accidents sometimes make manual handles difficult to find quickly.
When technology takes precedence over safety
Although new Tesla models are reputed for their safety, the reality is that tragic incidents have highlighted flaws in their design. Passengers have been trapped, unable to escape, even in the face of rescuers struggling to open the retractable doors. In this alarming context, it is not surprising that owners are seeking practical solutions.

Escape in case of power failure

In models such as the Model 3, Model Y, and the upcoming Cybertruck, front passengers benefit from an easily accessible mechanical unlock. In contrast, access to the handles for rear passengers is more complex. Take the Model 3, for example, where passengers must remove a plastic piece from the cup holder to manually free the door. This could quickly become chaotic in a panic situation.
For the Model X, the situation is even more delicate: one must remove the rear speaker grille to access a release cord. As for the Model S, the handle is hidden behind the carpet under the seats. Earlier versions of the Model 3 do not even have a manual unlock. In other words, a window breaker within reach could prove to be a true shield in an emergency.
Ingenious solutions are emerging

In response to this issue, some Tesla owners have ventured into selling accessories that facilitate access to the unlocking handles. A simple online search reveals a thriving niche around these solutions: custom cords from Tesery and EV Dynamics, as well as various kits available on Amazon for different Tesla models.
Awareness is spreading
Ride-share drivers using Tesla models have also begun to inform their passengers on how to free themselves in case of an accident. Chad Lincoln, an Uber driver in Tennessee, has adopted a “flight attendant style” announcement, explaining to his new passengers how to locate and use the emergency unlock.
Tesla, aware of the concerns raised, has already announced that a redesign of the door handles is under consideration. In September, chief designer Franz von Holzhausen stated that integrating the electric and manual systems into a single button would “make a lot of sense.”
